Former Barrie Colt Hopes To Soar With The Condors
Filed under ECHL (East Coast Hockey League)Nov 5Vladimir (Vlady) Nikiforov played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2005-06 to 2007-08. With the exception of 15 games at the end of his final season played with the Sarnia Sting, his whole OHL career was spent with the Barrie Colts. It was truly a treat to watch this 5’6″ (he now claims to be 5’8″ – maybe with skates on…) speedster run circles around his opponents at the Barrie Molson Centre.
In his rookie season with the Colts, he contributed 55 points in 68 games. In the playoffs, he added another 17 points in 14 games as the Colts reached the conference finals before losing in five games to eventual Robertson Cup champions, the Peterborough Petes.
Although not drafted, he played in the New York Islanders system in his first year of professional hockey. As a member of the Utah Grizzlies,he was selected to the East Coast Hockey League’s National Conference All-Star team but couldn’t play the game because he was called up to the American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
This past season, 2009-10, Vlad played solely with the Utah Grizzlies. Nikiforov was fifth on the team in scoring and played with numerous Ontario Hockey League grads throughout the season, such as: Adam Perry, Dylan Hunter, Lance Galbraith, Peter Aston, Tony Romano, Matt Clarke, Brett Parnham, Matt Caria, Malcolm MacMillan, Patrick, Asselin, Bobby Hughes, Evan Kotsopoulos, Jadran Beljo, Justin Suda, Jason Dale, Marcus Carroll, Parker Van Buskirk and Steven Tarasuk (during the playoffs).
This season, after three games with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL, Nikiforov was traded to the Bakersfield Condors. He began the season at the AHL’s Oklahoma City Barons camp.
