wes goldie alaska aces echl hockeyOntario Hockey League grad Wes Goldie is closing in fast on ECHL history. Goldie started out the season second all-time for goals scored in the league. He is still in second, behind Rod Taylor, but has moved within 17 goals of overtaking Taylor for the all-time lead. Wes began the 2011-12 ECHL season with 335 goals while Taylor retired at 368. 34 games into the season, Goldie has increased his total by 17 for 352.

Considering Wes has scored between 40 and 50 goals in each of his past five seasons, a 34 goal season in 2011-12 is certainly achievable. Goldie’s ECHL high came in 2008-09 with the Victoria Salmon Kings when he recorded 48 goals. Last season with the Alaska Aces, he led the league with 46 goals. His career high came in 2004-05 while playing for Sorel-Tracy in Quebec’s LNAH with 57 goals in 59 games. Back in 1998-99, he scored 46 in the Ontario Hockey League with the Owen Sound Platers.

Goldie played four full seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Platers from 1996-97 to 1999-00. He appeared in two games with the London Knights in 1995-96. Undrafted, he played four years in the ECHL before a two year stint in the Quebec league. He returned to the ECHL for the 2006-07 season with Victoria. He played four years with the Salmon Kings and was captain for the final two seasons. Wes has been with the Alaska Aces since the start of the 2010-11 season.

This season, Goldie is tied for ninth in the ECHL with 36 points. He has also made strides up the ECHL all-time points list. He started the season in 17th place and is now just a handful of points away from cracking the top ten. He’s also a bit of an ironman, missing a few games this season for the first time since rejoining the league in 2006.

The Aces are ripping up the ECHL in 2011-12. The team currently has a 15 point lead in their division and have a 13 point cushion between them and the next best team in the league. Alaska is the reigning Kelly Cup champion and Wes Goldie is the reigning ECHL Most Valuable Player.

Ontario Hockey League grad Peter Campbell led the Lega Italiana Hockey Ghiaccio Serie A2 in total goals for the second season in a row. 2010-11 was Campbell’s second season in the second division of the LIHG with Eppan-Appiano. He scored 41 goals and totalled 74 points in 32 league games, up from 33 and 72 in 31 over the 2009-10 season.

peter campbell eppan appiano italy lega italiana hockey ghiaccio series a2Campbell played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 1996-97 to 1999-00 and really showed his goal scoring brilliance during the 1998-99 season with the Owen Sound Platers when he popped in 45. Peter’s 88 points with the Platers that season were topped only by the late Dan Snyder.

Peter began his OHL career with the Sudbury Wolves and played there for two seasons before moving to Owen Sound for one season. His final season in the league began with the Belleville Bulls but after just nine games, he was moved to the Erie Otters.

Undrafted by an NHL club, Campbell spend just two years in the North American professional leagues, most the Central Hockey League, before heading to Europe. Since, Peter has played in Great Britain, Germany, Denmark and Italy. With Ravensburg of Germany’s Oberliga (tier 3) in 2005-06, Peter scored 50 goals in 52 games and totalled 104 points.

Peter was an all-star in Great Britain’s Elite Ice Hockey League in 2007-08 while playing mostly with the Belfast Giants. With Belfast, he lead the team in goals with 34 and totalled 78 points in just 43 games with the Giants.

Campbell is slated for a return to Eppan-Appiano for the 2011-12 season.

jamie storr deg metro stars los angeles kingsWith Canada still in mourning over their stunning third period breakdown and subsequent loss to Russia at the 2011 IIHF Under-20 World Junior Hockey Championships, we thought we’d take a look back at an Ontario Hockey League grad who won two golds at the tournament.

Jamie Storr played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 1991-92 to 1994-95. He was an Owen Sound Plater until midway through his final season when he was shipped to the Windsor Spitfires. He was named to the OHL’s All-Rookie Team in 1991-92 and was a First Team All-Star in 1993-94 as well as OHL Goaltender of the Year.

He played in both the 1994 and 1995 World Juniors with Canada taking the gold in both. He was also on the roster for Canada’s squad at the World Championships in 1994 with Canada winning gold in that tournament as well. He was named best goaltender of the tournament in the 1994 World Juniors. Previous to that, Jamie won gold in the under-17 and under-18 tournaments as well.

Storr was a goaltending rarity going in the high position of seventh overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings. Jamie played parts of ten seasons in the NHL with the Kings and the Carolina Hurricanes. Another extreme rarity, Storr was selected to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team two years in a row, 1997-98 and 1998-99. He didn’t play the minimum amount of games in 1997-98 which allowed him to be still considered a rookie the next season. Currently, Jamie sits 2nd on the list for most career shutouts in a Kings uniform. He sits fourth in both wins and games played.

In 2006-07, after two seasons toiling in the American Hockey League, Storr jumped to Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga. He played three seasons for the DEG Metro Stars. In his first season in Germany, his 2.33 goals against average was best in the league. Jamie retired as a player after the 2008-09 season and currently runs a goaltending school.

Marian Kacir is in his sixth year of professional hockey in Poland’s Ekstraliga. His status with Akuna Naprzod Janow is currently in limbo. However, the team needs his offensive power if they don’t want to remain in last place in the ten team league.

Kacir played two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League in 1992-93 and 1993-94, both with the Owen Sound Platers. In his second season with Owen Sound he was second on the team with 87 points and led the team in assists with 64. In 1991-92, before coming to the Platers, Marian scored 6 goals and 10 points for the Czechs as they captured gold at the European Junior Championships in 1991-92.

Kacir spent three years in the North American pro leagues from 1994-95 to 1996-97 with a handful of teams in the ECHL, IHL and AHL. In 1999-00, he led the Essen Mosquitos of Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga in goals (16), assists (29) and points (45) over 52 games. In 2006-07, he was the Poland Ekstraliga’s leader in assists and points. Kenny Corupe played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 1997-98 to 1999-00. He played for the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors until the trade deadline in his final season when he was shipped to the Owen Sound Attack.

Undrafted by any NHL clubs, Corupe spent six seasons playing for seven teams over three leagues in North American pro hockey. He achieved some offensive success with the Lousiana IceGators during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons with 42 points in 71 games and 55 points in 58 games. He came to the IceGators the year after OHL and ECHL legend, John Spoltore’s final season with the club.

In his first season in Italy, he led SG Cortina with 64 points in 33 games then added 20 points in 8 playoff games.

With Bolzano, he achieved his most success while in Italy. The team was Italian champion in 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2008-09, Corupe led the league in goals (35) and points (84) over 50 regular season games.

Corupe returns to North America this season with the Odessa Jackalopes of the Central Hockey League. He played for the club during the 2001-02 season, contributing 50 points in 49 games.
