Back To School Mondays: University of Western Ontario Mustangs

The University of Western Mustangs finished atop the Western Conference for the OUA 2010-11 regular season. Western lost to McGill in the Queen’s Cup final and was recently ousted in the semi-finals of the University Cup. Western was heavy on Ontario Hockey League grads this season with thirteen on the roster.
Kevin Baker – Kevin played five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2003-04 to 2007-08. Baker played with the Owen Sound Attack, Sudbury Wolves and Oshawa Generals.Steve Reese – Steve played four seasons in the OHL from 2006-07 to 2009-10 with the Sarnia Sting and Sudbury Wolves.
Josh McQuade – Josh played just one game in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes during the 2007-08 season.
Julian Cimadamore – Julian played four seasons in the OHL from 2006-07 to 2009-10 with the Ottawa 67′s and Kitchener Rangers.
Aaron Snow – Aaron played four seasons in the OHL from 2004-05 to 2007-08 and played for more teams than years. Snow spent time with the Brampton Battalion, Belleville Bulls, Windsor Spitfires, Niagara IceDogs and Sarnia Sting.
Keaton Turkiewicz – Keaton played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2004-05 to 2007-08. Turkiewicz played with the Sudbury Wolves, Windsor Spitfires and Belleville Bulls.
Scott Aarssen – Scott, a London born player, played four seasons with the London Knights from 2005-06 to 2008-09 and has just completed his second season with the hometown Mustangs.
Adam Nemeth – Adam played five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2002-03 to 2006-07 with the London Knights and Kingston Frontenacs.
Geoff Killing – Geoff played five seasons with the Belleville Bulls from 2003-04 to 2007-08.
Brandon Greenside – Brandon played two seasons in the OHL, 2007-08 and 2008-09. Greenside wore the jerseys of the Guelph Storm, Sudbury Wolves and London Knights.
Matt Paltridge – Matt played parts of two seasons, 2006-07 and 2007-08, with the Windsor Spitfires.
Josh Unice – Josh played between the pipes for three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2007-08 to 2009-10. Unice played for the Kitchener Rangers and Windsor Spitfires.
Anthony Grieco – Anthony played goal for the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors during the 2007-08 season.

The 2002-03 Plymouth Whalers finished the season third overall in the Ontario Hockey League and three points behind the Kitchener Rangers for first in the Western Conference. It would be the same Kitchener Rangers that would dash Plymouth’s playoff hopes in a conference final that went seven games.
Chad Larose led the team in every offensive category with 61 goals, 56 assists and 117 points. Larose finished third in league scoring with 117 points and tied for second in goals with 61.Paul Drew and Jeff Weber backstopped the team to the league’s best goals against average and thus won the Dave Pinkney Trophy. Chad Larose wsa named the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy Winner as the Ontario Hockey League’s top overage player.
17 players from that team are still actively playing hockey today. 2002-03 Whalers are scattered around the world in countries like Germany, United States, Canada, Italy, Czech Republic and Australia.

Jonas Fiedler – HC Havlichov Brod – Czech Extraliga 2
Tim Sestito – Albany Devils -AHL (did play some games with the NHL Devils)
Dave Liffiton - Lake Erie Monsters – AHL
Nate Kiser – South Carolina Stingrays – ECHL
Sean Thompson – Shelburne Muskies – WOAA (ok - not pro but he gets really deep discounts on equipment)
Martin Cizek – MEC Halle 04 – Oberliga (Germany)
Taylor Raszka – University of Prince Edward Island (played three years pro between OHL and CIS. Finishing up 2nd season in PEI)
Matt Armstrong – Melbourne Ice – AIHL (Australia) – played just four games with Whalers in 2002-03.
Ryan Nie – Kalamazoo Wings – ECHL

The Universityof Toronto Blues finished out the 2010-11 OUA season in sixth place in the Eastern Conference and have since been eliminated from the playoffs. On the roster this season were seven Ontario Hockey League grads.
Dylan O’Neil – Dylan played two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, 2006-07 and 2007-08. He spent both years with the St. Michael’s Majors, his first in Toronto and second in Mississauga.Byron Elliot – Byron played the same two seasons as Dylan O’Neil and with the same club.
Shawn Frank – Shawn played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2006-07 to 2008-09, all with the Barrie Colts.
Cameron Bernier – Cameron played four games with the Brampton Battalion in 2008-09.
Zack Fenwick – Zack played two seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs, 2007-08 and 2008-09.
Andrew Kizito – Andrew played two seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs, 2005-06 and 2006-07.
Russ Brownell – Russ played two seasons withe the Owen Sound Attack, 2005-06 and 2006-07.

The Queen’s Golden Gaels finished mid-pack in the Eastern Conference of the OUA, fifth out of ten teams. They were recently eliminated from playoff action by the Nippissing Lakers.
Queen’s has four players on the 2010-11 roster that played previously in the Ontario Hockey League. Two members of the coaching staff are also OHL Alumni.Payton Liske – Payton played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2004-05 to 2006-07, split between the Owen Sound Attack and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Robert Stellick – Robert played two seasons with the Belleville Bulls, 2007-08 and 2008-09.
Stephane Chabot - Stephane played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2005-06 to 2007-08. Chabot played with the Brampton Battalion and Kingston Frontenacs.
Patrick McEachen – Patrick played just seven games with the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors at the start of the 2010-11 season before moving to the OUA.
Head Coach Brett Gibson played in the Ontario Hockey League from 1996-97 to 1999-00. Gibson played for the Erie Otters, North Bay Centennials and London Knights.
Assistant Coach Tony Cimellaro played four seasons in the OHL from 1988-89 to 1991-92. He played for the North Bay Centennials, Kingston Raiders, Kingston Frontenacs and Belleville Bulls. Cimellaro played two games in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators during the 1992-93 season.

The University Ottawa GeeGees finished in eighth place in the OUA’s ten team Eastern Conference. The team featured five Ontario Hockey League grads on the roster this season.Sam Coyne – Sam played just one game with the Erie Otters during the 2007-08 season.
Steve Blunden – Steve played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2005-06 to 2008-09, split between the Belleville Bulls and the Ottawa 67′s.
Sean Smyth – Sean played 21 games with the Kitchener Rangers in 2005-06.
Matthieu Methot – Matthieu played three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2005-06 to 2007-08. Methot played for the Barrie Colts and the Ottawa 67′s. Matthieu was fifth in league scoring this season with 38 points in 23 games.
Aaron Barton – Aaron played between the pipes for two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League. He played for the Peterborough Petes in 2004-05 and the Mississauga IceDogs in 2005-06.
