“I’ve been coaching at this level for 12 years and Marc could be one of the most skilled players ever to play CIS hockey,” Huskies coach Trevor Stienburg said. (from a Toronto Star article published Friday, March 27, 2009)
The former Guelph Plater and London Knight was talking about Marc Rancourt. Rancourt played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League before his five year career with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. From 2001-02 to 2004-05, Marc was a member of the Belleville Bulls. He was team captain in his final campaign.
Rancourt graduated from the Ontario Hockey League with 176 regular season points in 253 games. He progressively improved his numbers each season and ended his final year with 26 goals and 52 assists for 78 points while playing in all 68 games for Belleville.
Over five years with St. Mary’s, Marc played 136 games and contributed 216 points. In 2008-09, as CIS Player of the Year, he was awarded the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy. He is only the second player in St. Mary’s history to be bestowed the honour. He also led the country in total points with 57. Not surprisingly, he was also named to the CIS All-Star Team that season. In his final year with the Huskies, the team won the national championship.
Rancourt has begun his professional hockey career this season with the Lanshut Cannibals of Germany’s 2.Bundesliga (a level below the elite Deutsche Eishockey Liga). He is joined on the team by another former Ontario Hockey League grad, Cody Thornton. Rancourt and Thornton were teammates in Belleville during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 season. They were also teammates at St. Mary’s for the past three seasons.
Marc has had a decent start to the season despite Landshut firmly settling into 12th position in the 13 team league. It would seem he’s taken on a different role than he’s used to. After just nine games, his penalty minute totalĀ is at 29 which eclipses his highest CIS total and is just ten minutes off his highest single seasonĀ total in the Ontario Hockey League.
Rancourt is under contract with Landshut for this season only. It would not be surprising to see him move up the ranks and onto a DEL team in the near future.
Check out Marc Rancourt’s profile page on the Landshut Cannibals official website.

Cody Thornton played five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2002-03 to 2006-07. His first three seasons were played with the Belleville Bulls. In 2003-04 and 2004-05, Cody began to develop his scoring touch with 21 and 23 goals for the Bulls.
In his final two seasons in the OHL, Thornton played for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds where he didn’t miss a single regular season game. Cody’s goal scoring increased each year with 26 in his first with the Greyhounds and 36 in his final season.
Thornton has spent the past three seasons in the Canadian university system with St. Mary’s in Nova Scotia. Cody was an offensive leader with the Huskies contributing 117 points in 83 games over the three years.
Cody Thornton has made the jump to the world of professional hockey for the 2010-11 season. Thornton has signed on with the Landshut Cannibals of Germany’s Bundesliga which is a level below the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL).
Cody Thornton has yet to be profiled on the Landshut Cannibals official website but the roster page can be found here. In time, the link to Cody’s profile page will appear on this page.
