After finishing up his fourth season with the University of Waterloo Warriors in the OUA, Ontario Hockey League grad Stephen Silas has started his pro career in the ECHL with the Missouri Mavericks. Silas played five years in the OHL with the Belleville Bulls before taking the route of higher education.
He joins fellow OHL grads Matt Finn and Dane Fox with the Mavericks, a team coached by another alumnus, John Scott Dickson. Missouri is battling for a Kelly Cup playoff spot, currently just on the outside looking, three points out of the eighth spot in the Western Conference.
Stephen Silas played on the blue line in the OHL for five years from 2008-09 to 2012-13, all with the Belleville Bulls. He was a first round pick by the Bulls at the 2008 OHL Priority Selection, 19th overall. Over his five years, Silas played in 324 regular season games, scoring 22 and assisting on 142 for 164 points. In the playoffs, he added seven points in 44 games for Belleville.
The Colorado Avalanche picked Stephen in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, 95th overall. He did not sign with the Avalanche, instead attending the University of Waterloo. He played for the Warriors in the OUA from 2013-14 to 2016-17 and named to the OUA West All-Rookie Team in his first year. Silas also had perfect attendance, not missing a single game over his OUA career.
Stephen Silas has signed with the Missouri Mavericks for the remainder of the 2016-17 ECHL season and has played in his first two games with the club.
The Mavericks began play in the Central Hockey League for the 2009-10 season and moved over to the ECHL after the 2014-15 merger. In 2015-16, the team finished first overall in the ECHL with 52 wins and 109 points, earning the Brabham Cup. However, the Mavericks were bounced in the conference semi-finals by the Allen Americans, the eventual Kelly Cup champions. Currently, Missouri sits in ninth spot in the Western Conference, tied with the Utah Grizzlies and three points behind the Kalamazoo Wings.
Stephen Silas joins fellow OHL grad Matt Finn on the blue line. Finn played four years in the Ontario Hockey League from 2010-11 to 2013-14 with the Guelph Storm. This is Matt’s second year with the Mavericks and he has seen time in the American Hockey League both seasons with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Dane Fox is providing offense for the Mavericks, as he did in the OHL with the Erie Otters when he scored 64 goals in 2013-14. Fox played five years in the OHL from 2009-10 to 2013-14 with the Otters and London Knights.
Head coach and director of hockey operations, John Scott Dickson, played five years in the OHL from 2000-01 to 2004-05 with the Windsor Spitfires.
