AHL 50 Goal Scorers

brad smyth london knightsThe American Hockey League has long been the number feeder league to the National Hockey League. The AHL often has mirrorred the number of NHL teams and the length of the regular season schedule. What doesn’t match is the offensive output. Where the NHL has had 189 50+ goal performances as of the end of the 2010-11 season, the AHL has had just 50 such milestone seasons.

The AHL record for most goals in a season was set in 1988-89 when Stephan Lebeau of the Sherbrooke Canadiens scored 70 goals in 78 games. Just four other players have reached the 60 goal plateau: Brad Smyth, Paul Gardner, Alexandre Giroux and Jody Gage. Giroux is the only player to reach 50 and beyond over the last four seasons with 60 in 2008-09 and 50 in 2009-10, both times with the Hershey Bears.

This list might not look up-to-date but it is. Not only has the not been a 50 goal scorer in the AHL since 2009-10, there hasn’t been a 40 goal scorer since 2010-11.
