Ontario Hockey League grad Patrick Asselin has signed for a second season with the Cardiff Devils in the United Kingdom’s Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). Asselin helped the club to a first place finish in 2016-17 before losing in the grand final 6-5 to the Sheffield Steelers in double overtime. Patrick is joined on the roster by fellow OHL grad Andrew Hotham. Hotham enters his fourth year with the Devils and has led the league’s defensmen in scoring in each of the previous three seasons.
Patrick Asselin played five years in the Ontario Hockey League from 2003-04 to 2007-08 with the Saginaw Spirit and Oshawa Generals. The Spirit drafted Asselin in the second round of the 2003 OHL Priority Selection, 34th overall. A trade 15 games into the 2007-08 season sent Patrick to the Generals. He was team captain for Saginaw for those 15 games. Over his five years, Asselin scored 102 goals and assisted on 97 for 199 points over 318 regular season games. In 25 playoff games, he added 13 points.
Undrafted to the National Hockey League, Asselin has played pro hockey since 2008-09 in Germany’s Oberliga and DEL2, the ECHL, Denmark’s Metal Ligaen and the EIHL. He was the top scorer in the Metal Ligaen in 2012-13 with 53 points in 40 games for SonderjyskE.
After missing the entire 2015-16 season, Patrick signed with the Cardiff Devils for 2016-17. Over 50 games, he scored 18 and assisted on 29 for 47 points. Of note, he sat just eight minutes in penalties, a rare low number in the EIHL. The team finished first overall in the ten team league. In the playoffs, the reached the grand final but were felled by the Sheffield Steelers in a game that needed two extra periods to determine a winner.
The Cardiff Devils were established in 1986 and were a charter member of the Elite Ice Hockey League when it formed for the 2003-04 season. They have yet to win a playoff championship in the EIHL but have reached the final five times since 2003-04. Their last post season title came in 1998-99 in the former BNL. Home games for the club are played at the Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff, Wales, a 3,088 seat venue that opened in 2016.
Andrew Hotham joined the club for the 2014-15 EIHL season and has starred with the Devils ever since. Hotham played four years in the OHL from 2003-04 to 2006-07 with the Barrie Colts, Erie Otters and Saginaw Spirit. Hotham and Asselin were teammates with Saginaw for a short time.
Andrew has led the EIHL’s blue liners in assists and points in each of his three seasons. He has been named EIHL Defenseman of the Year and a First Team All-Star in each of the three years. In 2016-17, he was named EIHL Player of the Year.
