Brian McGrattan and Sean McMorrow each played for six teams in the Ontario Hockey League. Mike Sillinger played for 12 NHL teams. OHL grad Nathan Moon has been picked up off waivers by the Elmira Jackals, what will be his fifth ECHL team in just this 2016-17 season. Not sure if that’s any kind of record but it is a lot of moving in a short amount of time.
Nathan Moon had a stable Ontario Hockey League career, playing for just the Kingston Frontenacs for five years between 2006-07 and 2010-11. The Frontenacs drafted him in the second round of the 2006 OHL Priority Selection, 34th overall.
Over his OHL career, Moon scored 139 and assisted on 193 for 332 points in 316 regular season games. He scored 30 or more in three of his five seasons in Kingston. In the playoffs, Nathan added 13 points in just 17 games.
The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Moon in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, 120th overall. His first pro hockey action came at the end of the 2010-11 season with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in the Central Hockey League. He appeared in seven playoff games and the Mudbugs won the Ray Miron President’s Cup.
Since 2011-12, Nathan has played pro hockey in the AHL, ECHL and the U.K.’s Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL).
2016-17 started with the Rapid City Rush. After 12 games, Moon found himself on the roster of the Wichita Thunder. He played 19 games with Wichita, his longest stay with a single team this year. Next, he moved on to the Toledo Walleye where he appeared in seven games. His last club was the Reading Royals, playing ten games before being released. So far, Nathan has played 48 games this season, scoring nine and assisting on 14.
If you included 2015-16, Moon is on his seventh team in two years. Last year started with the Colorado Eagles but was mostly spent with the Evansville IceMen.
If he sticks with the Jackals, Nathan Moon will not see Kelly Cup playoff action in 2016-17. Elmira has not qualified for the post season in the past three seasons and 2016-17 will be no exception. The team is currently dead last in the 27 team ECHL.
There are two other Ontario Hockey League alumni on the roster. Matt Stanisz played five years in the league from 2006-07 to 2010-11 with the Barrie Colts and Owen Sound Attack. Justin Kea played four years from 2010-11 to 2013-14 with the Saginaw Spirit.
Head coach Mike Duco played five years with the Kitchener Rangers from 2003-04 to 2007-08. He was to play with the Jackals this season while also taking on the assistant coaching role. Instead, he has stayed off the ice and is the team’s bench boss.
The Elmira Jackals franchise began in the UHL for the 2000-01 season. The team joined the ECHL for 2007-08. The club is affiliated with the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League and the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL. Home games are played at the First Arena in Elmira, New York, a 3,784 seat venue that opened in 2000.
