I don’t like to show preference to any one OHL team when writing posts for this site. However, hanging out at the London Gardens starting in the mid-1970’s and sticking with them through thick and thin does make me partial to the Knights. One of my favourite Knights of all-time is a Russian import who played two seasons, 1996-97 and 1997-98.
Maxim Spiridonov played a huge part in London’s climb back to respectability after the dismal 1995-96 3-win season. A true sniper, Max scored 31 goals in 55 games in his first season and 54 goals in 66 games in his second season. The second year totals were good enough for second in the league in goals and 4th in the league in scoring with his 98 total points. More importantly, the Knights landed first place in their division just two years after their CHL record breaking performance in futility.
An Edmonton Oilers draft pick, Max toiled in the North American minors before returning to Russia for the 2001-02 season. He is currently a member of Astana Barys of the KHL and finds himself in the top 20 in league scoring.
The KHL official site is in both Russian and English. Spiridonov’s official profile at the league site can be found here. The Barys official website is not in English but Maxim’s profile page can be found here.
