An OHL Fan’s Guide to the Kings vs. Coyotes Series

2012 stanley cupLos Angeles Kings vs. Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL’s Western Conference final. Why would anyone in Canada, especially east of Manitoba, watch this series? The teams are based thousands of miles from the centre of hockey (Orangeville, Ontario) and the games start after most of our bedtimes.

If you’re reading this article on this site, chances are high that the Ontario Hockey League is dear to your heart. It turns out that this Western Conference final series is pretty significant to OHL fans. 16 players between the two teams have at one time played in the OHL. These 16 players have played at least a game in the Stanley Cup playoffs over the first two rounds.

I have a personal interest in Los Angeles winning this series, solely on the $120 I will make when the Kings win the Stanley Cup. However, if OHL fans are undecided on which of these two teams to cheer for, Los Angeles out-OHLs the Coyotes 10-6.

Just the Facts:

  • 10 OHL grads from the Los Angeles Kings have seen action in the 1st two rounds of the 2012 playoffs.
  • 6 OHL grads from the Phoenix Coyotes have seen action in the 1st two rounds of the 2012 playoffs.
  • 12 OHL teams are represented in this Western Conference final series.
  • Even though Raffi Torres won’t play in the series, him and Klesla were teammates in Brampton for two years.
