OHL grad Justin Shugg should act as a good luck charm for Kolner Haie (Cologne Sharks) in Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga. After all, over a four year span, he played in three Memorial Cup tournaments (winning twice) and won a Kelly Cup championship in the ECHL.
Shugg has signed with Koln for the 2017-18 DEL season. Justin joins fellow Ontario Hockey League alumnus Shawn Lalonde. Lalonde has been with the club since 2015-16 and is signed through the 2018-19 season.
Justin Shugg played four years in the Ontario Hockey League from 2007-08 to 2010-11 with the Oshawa Generals, Windsor Spitfires and Mississauga Majors. The Generals picked Shugg tenth overall at the 2007 OHL Priority Selection but were quick to trade him at the 2007-08 deadline. Justin was shipped to the Spitfires, along with Jakub Kovar for Michal Neuvirth and Ryan Baldwin. Dale Mitchell would also be shipped to Windsor much later to close the deal.
With Windsor, Shugg helped the Spitfires to consecutive OHL and Memorial Cup championships in 2008-09 and 2009-10. In August, 2010, he and Marc Cantin were shipped to the Mississauga Majors where he would make another visit to the Memorial Cup tournament.
A goal scorer, Justin finished ninth in 2009-10 with 39 goals for the Spits, tied with Cody Lindsay of the Oshawa Generals and Taylor Beck of the Guelph Storm. The following season with the Majors, he once again finished in a three was tied for ninth spot with 41 goals, equaling Shawn Szydlowski of the Erie Otters and Darren Archibald who split his season between the Barrie Colts and Niagara IceDogs.
The Carolina Hurricanes selected Shugg in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, 105th overall. He has played pro hockey since 2011-12 in the AHL, ECHL, NHL, KHL and DEL. In his rookie season, Justin spent much of his time in the American Hockey League but finished up with eleven regular season and eleven playoff games for the Florida Everblades in the ECHL as the team captured the Kelly Cup championship.
Shugg’s National Hockey League experience is limited to three games with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014-15. This past season, he started the year with Dinamo Riga in the KHL. After 33 games, he switched to Augsburger Panther in Germany’s DEL. With Augsburg, Justin played 20 regular season and six playoff games. The team finished sixth in the 14 team league and fell in the quarter-finals to the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers.
Kolner Haie (Cologne Sharks) are a charter member of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. The team won the championship in the league’s first season, 1994-95. Since, they have captured just one other title, in 2001-02. A strong club, Koln has missed the post season just twice in over two decades. In 2016-17, they finished fourth in the 14 team DEL and lost in the quarter-finals.
Shawn Lalonde will enter his third season with Kolner Haie in 2017-18 and is under contract with the club through the 2018-19 DEL season. Lalonde played four years in the OHL from 2006-07 to 2009-10, all with the Belleville Bulls.
