After 906 regular season games in the National Hockey League and a failed tryout with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2017-18, OHL grad Jay McClement is off to Switzerland. However, he will not be playing in the elite National League but with EHC Olten in the tier 2 NLB. McClement is signed for 2017-18 with an option for another season.

Jay McClement

Jay McClement played four years in the Ontario Hockey League from 1999-00 to 2002-03, all with the Brampton Battalion. McClement was the second overall pick by the Battalion at the 1999 OHL Priority Selection, behind just Jason Spezza who was picked by the Mississauga IceDogs.

Over his time in Brampton, Jay scored 91 goals and assisted on 91 for 182 points in 235 regular season games. He added 17 points in the playoffs. McClement was team captain in his final year with the Battalion and won silver with Team Canada at both the 2002 and 2003 IIHF World Junior Championships.

The St. Louis Blues selected Jay in the second round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, 57th overall. Between 2005-06 and 2016-17, he played in 906 regular season National Hockey League games with the Blues, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes. He appeared in just eleven playoff games over that time.

McClement spent 2016-17 with the Carolina Hurricanes. He had a tryout with the Pittsburgh Penguins at the start of the 2017-18 NHL season but was released on October 1, 2017. Jay is signed with EHC Olten for this year with an option to extend that through 2018-19.

EHC Olten

EHC Olten dates back to 1934 and play home games at the Kleinholz in Olten, Switzerland, a 6,020 seat venue that opened in 1976. They have reached the post season each year since 2007-08 and reached the National League B finals in 2012-13 and 2014-15.

In 2016-17, Olten finished fourth in the 12 team league over the 48 game schedule but were quickly bounced in the quarter-finals. This year, 2017-18, they sit third in the now eleven team league after the first 12 games.

Olten, Switzerland is located in northern Switzerland and has a population of around 18,000 residents. It serves as a hub with Zurich, Bern, Basel and Lucerne all within a half hour away.
