The 2016-17 Metal Ligaen regular season in Denmark is in the books with all ten teams finishing their 45 game schedule. The final numbers are pretty impressive when it comes to the top scorers. Dale Mitchell of the Odense Bulldogs has won his second consecutive scoring title. Behind him is Odense teammate Tony Romano. In third spot is Harrison Reed of SonderjyskE, the scoring leader in Germany’s DEL2 in 2013-14.
Among the top ten in the Metal Ligaen are two more Ontario Hockey League alumni. Jamie Johnson of Herning Blue Fox finished tied for sixth. Ryan Martindale of Esbjerg Energy placed tied for eighth.
In 44 games, Dale Mitchell scored 27 and assisted on 40 for 67 points. He led the league in assists and points and was tied for third in goal scoring with Harrison Reed. His penalty minute total dropped to 124, good for just fourth in the league. In 2015-16, he led the Metal Ligaen with 236 PIM.
Mitchell played five years in the OHL from 2005-06 to 2009-10 with the Oshawa Generals and Windsor Spitfires. 2016-17 was his third year with the Bulldogs. In 2015-16, he led the Metal Ligaen with 34 goals and 77 points to go with his 236 PIM.
Dale is signed with Odense through 2017-18. The team finished the 2016-17 regular season second place in the ten team league, just behind first place Aalborg Pirates. At the other end of the spectrum, the Herlev Eagles finished last with just win in regulation time and five more in overtime.
In his first year as a teammate of Dale Mitchell with the Odense Bulldogs, Tony Romano scored 28 and assisted on 26 for 54 points over 42 games. Along with his second place finish in overall scoring, he placed second in the Metal Ligaen for goal scoring and led the league with a +36.
Romano played two years in the Ontario Hockey League. In 2007-08, he played for the London Knights. In 2008-09, he moved east to play for the Peterborough Petes. Tony has played in Europe since 2012-13 in the Austria based EBEL, Sweden’s Allsvenskan, Norway’s Get Ligaen and the Metal Ligaen. In 2015-16, he helped Lorenskog to a silver medal finish in the Get Ligaen.
In his first year with SonderjyskE, Harrison Reed scored 27 and assisted on 23 for 50 points over 45 games. Reed finished third in overall scoring and also tied for third in goal scoring. SonderjyskE finished fifth, their lowest position since 2004-05. Since 2005-06, they have won the championship six times, including a three year run between 2012-13 and 2014-15. In 2015-16, the team placed first overall and lost in the bronze medal game.
Reed played four years in the OHL from 2004-05 to 2007-08 with the London Knights, Sarnia Sting and Guelph Storm. He has been in Europe since 2013-14 in both Germany’s DEL2 and DEL, along with the Metal Ligaen. In 2013-14, Harrison led the DEL2 with 40 goals and 90 points with Eispiraten Crimmitschau. He was also named DEL2 Forward of the Year.
Other OHL Grads In Top 10
As mentioned, two other Ontario Hockey League grads placed in the top 10. Jamie Johnson tied for sixth with 47 points on 14 goals and 33 assists over 45 games with Herning Blue Fox. Johnson played four years in the OHL from 1999-00 to 2002-03 with the Sarnia Sting and Oshawa Generals.
Ryan Martindale tied for eighth with 45 points on 20 goals and 25 in 45 games with Esbjerg Energy. Martindale played four years in the Ontario Hockey League from 2007-08 to 2010-11 with the Ottawa 67’s.
