Coventy Blaze of the EIHL Stock Up On OHL Grads

coventry blaze elite ice hockey league eihl great britain englandAfter the population of Ontario Hockey League grads seemed to drop in Great Britain’s Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) in 2012-13, the Coventry Blaze are bucking any such trend with three OHL alumni already on the roster for 2013-14. Coventry has been in the BNL/EIHL since the 2000-01 season and were playoff champions in 2002-03 and 2004-05. In 2012-13, the Blaze finished fourth out of ten teams and lost in the semi-finals. The team plays their home games at the 3,000 seat Skydoem Arena in Coventry, a venue built in 1999.

Kevin Harvey

After being drafted by the Kingston Frontenacs in the fourth round of the 2000 OHL Priority Selection, 76th overall, Harvey didn’t see his first action in the OHL until the 2001-02 season. Even then, he played just two games for the Frontenacs. Kevin waited until 2003-04 to finally get a near full season in, playing 59 games with the Owen Sound Attack.

Despite being stuck in the OPJHL for the 2002-03 season and only playing 35 games between two different teams, the Calgary Flames selected him in the ninth round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, 270th overall. He has played pro since 2006-07 in the CHL, ECHL, AHL and the Slovakia Extraliga.

Harvey was a champion in 2011-12. After starting his year in the ECHL, playing for the Toledo Walleye and Elmira Jackals, Kevin headed to Slovakia to play for HC Slovan Bratislava. The team won the Extraliga championship. He returned to the Jackals to play the 2012-13 season. Kevin has signed for one year with the Blaze.

Michael Henrich

The brothers are together again. Michael, the oldest played four years in the OHL with the Barrie Colts from 1996-97 to 1999-00. Barrie orginally drafted Henrich fifth overall at the 1996 OHL Priority Selection. In his final year with the Colts, Barrie took the full seven games in the finals to beat the Plymouth Whalers and capture the Robertson Cup.

Michael was selected thirteenth overall by the Edmonton Oilers at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He is the only skater picked in that first round that has yet to play a game in the National Hockey League. Henrich has been in Europe since 2004-05, playing in Germany, Italy and Austria. With Asiago in Italy’s Lega Italiana Hockey su Ghiaccio (LIHG), he helped the team to consecutive championships in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Henrich spent 2012-13 in Austria’s Erste Bank Eishockey Liga (EBEL) with Dornbirner EC. He has signed with Coventry for one year through 2013-14.

Adam Henrich

The last time Adam played with his older brother, they were Italian champions with Asiago in 2010-11. Henrich played four years with the Brampton Battalion from 2000-01 to 2003-04. Brampton took him seventh overall at the 2000 OHL Priority Selection. The Tampa Bay Lightning selected him in the second round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, 60th overall, but, like brother Michael, he has not appeared in a single NHL game.

Between 2004-05 and 2009-10, Adam played for several teams in the ECHL and AHL. He has been in Europe since the latter half of the 2009-10 season, playing in Germany, Italy and England. His 2012-13 season startedf with SC Riessersee of Germany’s 2.Bundesliga and ended with Coventry.
