London Knight Alumnus Still Going Strong 17 Years Later
Filed under AustriaMar 25
What do these 16 professional hockey teams have in common: Birmingham Bulls (ECHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (IHL), Springfield Falcons (AHL), Carolina Monarchs (AHL), Florida Panthers (NHL), Phoenix Roadrunners (IHL), Los Angeles Kings (NHL), Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL), New York Rangers (NHL), Nashville Predators (NHL), Milwaukee Admirals (IHL), Binghamton Senators (AHL), Ottawa Senators (NHL), Karpat (Finland), Hamburg Freezers (DEL) and Zagreb Medvescak KHL (Austria)? All these teams have housed London Knight Alumnus, Brad Smyth, at some point over the past 17 years.
Brad Smyth played with the Knights from 1990-91 to 1992-93. His final season was nothing less than stellar with 54 goals and 55 assists for 109 points in 66 games. His most prolific season in professional hockey came in 1995-96 with the Carolina Monarchs when he put in 68 goals and added 58 assists for 126 points in just 68 games. This feat was good enough for league’s top scorer and league MVP. In 2000-01, he would hit the 50 goal plateau one more time with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL.
Brad left North America for the 2006-07 season and put in three seasons with the Hamburg Freezers of Germany’s DEL. With Hamburg, he was, for the most part, a point per game player.
This season, Brad switched to Austria’s Erste Bank Eishockey Liga and played with KHL Zagreb Medvescak. The team finished 8th in the 10 team league. Despite being the lowest seed, the team knocked off the number one Graz 99ers in the first round of the playoffs. The playoff run ended in the semi-finals when they lost to the number two seed, Salzburg.
In all-star voting this season, Brad finished second for the right wing position to another OHL alumnus, John Hecimovic.
