Continuing with the penalty theme we’ve been on lately, today we look at Germany’s Deutsche Eishockey Liga. After the 52 game DEL regular season was in the books, the four players with the highest number of penalty minutes were all Ontario Hockey League grads.
1. Peter Flache – Augsburger Panther
Peter Flache, who we recently featured at OHL Alumni Central, led the league with a modest 133 PIM. Flache played four years in the OHL from 1999-00 to 2002-03 with the Guelph Storm, North Bay Centennials and Saginaw Spirit.
Flache, a ninth round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, played his fifth year in the DEL and his third with Augsburg. He has just signed a two year deal with the Straubing Tigers through, 2014-15.
2. Mark Bell – Iserlohn Roosters
Bell placed second in the DEL with 122 PIM. It was his first year in the league and Mark is under contract with Iserlohn for the 2013-14 season. Bell played four years in the OHL from 1996-97 to 1999-00, all with the Ottawa 67’s. Like Peter Flache, Bell was a draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, going eighth overall in 1998. He played 450 games in the NHL with the Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks.
3. Blaine Down – Straubing Tigers
Down placed third with 109 PIM but also appeared in the top 10 for goals and points. Blaine played three years in the OHL from 1999-00 to 2001-02 with the Barrie Colts.
2012-13 was his first year in the DEL but Down has been in Europe since 2005-06, also playing in Italy, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany. He had been in Switzerland since 2008-09. Blaine will be teammates with Peter Flache in 2013-14 as he’s signed on for one more year with Straubing.
4. Matt Dzieduszycki – Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg
Dzieduszycki sat just three minutes less than Blaine Down. The veteran of the DEL finished his seventh year in the league and his second with Wolfsburg. Matt led the league in goals scored in 2012-13 with 31. He is signed with the club through 2013-14.
Matt played two years in the OHL, 1999-00 and 2000-01, teammates with Blaine Down with the Barrie Colts. He was team captain in 2000-01.
Compared to 2011-12
Peter Flache’s DEL leading 133 PIM would have placed him just third in the league in 2011-12. David Wolf of the Hamburg Freezers sat 167 minutes. The only Ontario Hockey League grad among the top ten a year ago was Charlie Stephens of Kolner Haie (Cologne Sharks). Charlie tied for seventh with 108 PIM.
Stephens played five years in the OHL from 1997-98 to 2001-02 with the Toronto Majors, Guelph Storm and London Knights. He has spent the past seven years in the DEL and the past two with Kolner.
